The great diva-dj of all dancefloors turns 64 today! Junior Vasquez (nee Donald Paul Mattern) moved to NYC from Pennsylvania in 1971 with the intent of becoming a fashion designer. Going to Paradise Garage, he was inspired by the work of legendary Larry Levan and began his career in music production in the 1980s. Vasquez began to work with DJ and pop remixer/producer Shep Pettibone. They co-produced numerous remixes of artists like Madonna, Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Janet Jackson
and others. It wasn't long before Vasquez landed a brief residency at
Club Bassline, where he began to make a name for himself as a DJ.
Through the early to mid 1990s, Junior ultimately became a very influential dj at his residency at Sound Factory. He then went on to be known as a remixer and producer, ultimately creating his own indy label.
Today, we wish him a happy birthday and salute him with his 1994 house classic with vocals by the great Sabrina Johnston:
