Cine Beaverhausen: Turn Around, Big Eyes

This is the Keanest film from director Tim Burton to date.

In the late '50s and throughout the '60s, the Keane "big eyes" paintings were extremely popular. While Burton evokes the era expertly, I did sometimes feel clobbered by the period detail throughout the modest just-over-90-minute length of this film.

Big Eyes is essentially about plagiarism, in this case about a husband appropriating and claiming credit for his wife's art. It's about sexism, insanity and psychological abuse, should that be to your taste.

Growing up with Keane paintings, I thought of them as kitsch, much like Terrence Stamp does in the movie. However, Big Eyes is distinctly Tim Burton's most mature work so far. The eyes on Keane paintings will now haunt me in a new, kitschy way.

Though Oscar snubbed, Amy Adams won a Golden Globe for her performance. Waltz was nominated as was the original song, "Big Eyes" by Lana del Ray
