Vito Russo & Neil Tennant: Happy Birthday to Two Gay Icons

Today happens to be the birthday of two of my favorite out, gay icons: the late Vito Russo, film historian, author, LGBT activist and co-founder of GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) best known for his landmark book about the representation of gay men and women in film, "The Celluloid Closet." And Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys!

Russo developed material for "Closet" following screenings of films shown as fundraisers for the 1970s organization, Gay Activists Alliance. He died of AIDS-related complications in 1990.

I very highly recommend the book and, also, the film documentary (1995) based on it. Talking heads in the movie include Lily Tomlin, Shirley MacLaine, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon and Tom Hanks. Fabulous film clips! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112651/

Neil Tennant formed Pet Shop Boys with band mate Chris Lowe. Their first smash hit was "West End Girls" (1984) and, for three decades, they have remained successful and relevant in the realms of pop, dance-music and electronica, their singles and albums continually charting on both radio and club charts.  I've always considered this erudite neo-disco gentleman, Neil, a hottie as well (http://djbuddybeaverhausen.blogspot.com/2012/02/my-top-five-most-fabulous-men.html).

The Pet Shop Boys' new dance album, Electric, will be released in the US, on July 16, on their new label, Kobalt.

So, Happy Birthday, Neil! Happy Birthday, Vito! Both your cultural contributions will never be forgotten.

Below, the Pet Shop Boys' new single off the Electric album. Maybe not much on lyrics (the Boys are usually verbose) but get ready to dance again!

My Top Five Most Fabulous Men

I want to discuss my fantasies. Not about being able to fly; having a Rolls-Royce with a chauffeur; or hanging out at a bar, over drinks, with my new best bud, Lady Gaga; not those kind of fantasies. The other kind. The kind that get me... err... a little bewitched, bothered and bewildered. Yes, fantasies about Men, damn it!

It occurred to me to come up with a list about the guys with whom I'd like to get under the covers (at least in my dreams), so here's my top five (for starters), admittedly eclectic, list, in absolutely no particular order. (Of course, all the men listed are famous because, frankly, even though I have very lively fantasies of men on the street or on the subway, I have no names, no bios and no pics for those guys.) Here goes:

Eric McCormack. Yes, I know the gay-for-pay tv star of Will & Grace is straight, but I can dream, can't I, imagining he could be had? I first took note of Eric on an Outer Limits episode, and was thrilled when this hunk ended up assaying the Will Truman role on tv. A recipient of the GLAAD Award and the gayest straight man on Earth, I will be seeing him soon on Broadway in Gore Vidal's The Best Man (and loving it).

Neil Tennant of The Pet Shop Boys, age appropriate, proper sexy British accent, intelligent, sensitive, rich and tall. Just what I'm shopping for! Hello, Neil, dahling!

Porn stars are definitely a part of my fantasies. I love the more mature bears, like Colton Ford (who quit the porn scene after much success for obvious reasons). I know he is very happily involved in a relationship, but I'd have no trouble breaking up somebody's home, so, obviously, that's not a problem.

Then there's Czech hunk, Arpad Miklos. He's a Manhattan escort, so there's always a chance with him, though I'd want him, ultimately, to escort me into bed. I have a feeling that money is a big factor with Arpie, so I'd really have to put in more dj hours. But my big goal would be to make him love me so he'd just forget about that silly money stuff!

Finally, I've long been a fan of this big daddy. The sheer size, those massive shoulders, he's into Zen! I know that Phil Jackson's a married man, but this is my fantasy, after all. I'd be happy with any amazing, colossal man who just resembles him (with a similar bank account, please).

Well, there you have it, the secret Men fantasy file of the mind. Let me know what you think. But, I believe these are, indeed, my Top Five Most Wanted. Of course, I could go on if I were provoked, to do a Top Ten.
