Bette Midler, "Angst on a Shoestring" - from David Letterman's Holiday Film Festival (1985)

One of the most popular tracks from Bette Midler's 1985 live, stand-up comedy album, Mud Will Be Flung Tonight, is "Why Bother?" It is the negative, whining drone of a total loser and it's hilarious! However, this stand-up routine was originally done as part of David Letterman's celebrity competition for the holiday season. Bette's contribution was so outstanding, she received an Emmy for it.

This rare video is found below. Bette is accompanied by Marc Shaiman (Broadway's "Hairspray") on piano. The Lady Di joke was on the version that appeared on the original album but, after Diana's death, it was removed from later re-releases.

You have to hold on till the end to get the Christmas connection. Enjoy!
