Divas and Demographics

What a week for diva birthdays! Not only did we commemorate Joan Crawford's, but Chaka Khan and Diana Ross had birthdays right behind her! So, Happy Birthdays, Divas! Where would we be without your desperately needed fabulousness?

It was also just this past week that I stumbled on this blog's review of the new Martha Wash album on that Diva's official web site. I'm wearing her cd out. I play it all. The. Time! Here's the review via marthawash.com. Handsomely displayed there. By the way, Martha is one of the cool people who turned her Facebook profile picture into the marriage equality symbol in light of the US Supreme Cort's upcoming decision on the matter. http://www.marthawash.com/beaverhausen-im-into-something-good-martha-wash/

Diva/songwriter Janice Robinson is in L.A., having recorded a new album, I believe. I've been following her on Facebook and we hope to hear from her, more prominently, here soon. We shall see. Looking forward to new material from this artist. We adore her!

Calling out around the world! Are you ready for a brand-new beat? Thanks to international views outside my beloved US/UK/Canada/Germany base to: Brazil, Iraq, Turkey, Japan, China, Georgia, Ukraine, Australia, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, India, Chile, Indonesia, Poland, Russia and everybody else who visits here! Big kisses from Dj Buddy B! Music is the great uniter. Beyond boundaries, beyond borders, support international music and keep on dancing! Peace, love and disco!

I leave you with this video of Martha Wash previewing "It's My Time," from her new album, Something Good, at Joe's Pub last year.

David Morales' Changes: Divahood Is Powerful

As autumn breezes sweep in a fresh, new season, there has probably been no finer dance-music album this past summer -- or perhaps for all 2012 to date -- than David Morales' Changes, available through iTunes and CD Universe. It is the first album from the Grammy Award-winning producer/remixer/dj since Two Worlds Collide in 2004.

The beautifully conceived and executed techno-disco single, "Golden Era" preceded the album release. It features the outstanding Roisin Murphy on vocals, in a swirl of strings and cowbells above the got-to-move bass line. Morales says of Murphy, in an interview with Joonbug, "She is not just some bubblegum chick that went la-la-la." In fact, this is not a "la-la-la" album of house tracks by any means. Here, we're going deeper with meaning, with diva attitude, with style, with music. But it's an upbeat series of tracks in any event. Just get that bubblegum out your mouth when you shake your ass to the rhythm.

The remixes of "Golden Era" are highly recommended and can be purchased from Amazon.com.

Ok, this album is simply amazing, and the divahood factor is through the roof as Morales works with a sampling of clubland's best. Janice Robinson is totally fantastic singing her self-penned "What Do You Believe In?" It's a touching number that will also make you want to move. Janice has recently been writing hits for others, like Frenchie Davis and Deborah Cox, so it's livin' joy to find her returning to the studio and stage as vocalist, reclaiming her spotlight.

Divahood is powerful, David acknowledges, with no less than three numbers from the divine Ultra Nate. Her "I Really Love" kicks off the album with regal style, though "Planet Called Love" may be my fave of the three.

Polina is on hand with the dreamy "Holiday" (no, not the song by you-know-who), "Stay" (the album's second single with remixes) and "Fall In Love." Tamra Keenan has two offerings included (the catchy "I Don't Belong Here" and "7 Days"), and Jonathan Mendelsohn is the sole male artist, offering some controlled testosterone vocals ("You Just Don't Love  Me" and "Last Time") on two tracks as well.

This is an expertly produced, melodic work of disco genius. Strong artists, strong lyrics, just beautifully done music from a true maestro in the world of dance, David Morales. So, say goodbye to summer -- and bubblegum!

Below, my favorite remix of "Stay" by the fabulous Joe T. Vannelli, who knows how to work a song:

Hot in Danceland

Abu-dabu-Dhabi!
This week, New York City was chilly and wet, wet, wet. C'mon, come through, New York, New York!

But things are sizzling in Danceland. My blog has gotten a lot of hits recently from United Arab Emirates, most likely from Abu Dhabi, and I want to send thanks to whoever is reading my blog there! I love Abu in the springtime... and ABBA, too! I hope to vacation there later in the year and have a Sex in The City II-like experience (without the dropping my condoms in a public square part).

David Morales' album officially drops this week, featuring the debut single, "Golden Era," with vocals by Roisin Murphy. The album is called Changes and it also includes vocals by club goddesses Janice Robinson, Tamra Keenan and Polina. Not so shabby... even in Abu Dhabi! He will dj at Cielo Thursday night and include tracks from Changes. Love is being sent out, especially to Janice, whose song "Dreamer," done with Italo-house group, Living Joy in the 1990s, is a perennial classic. She's on the trail as solo performer (has continued to write for other artists, notably Deborah Cox), and I can't wait to hear her perform again; she's been away too long and, like Dolly, nice to have her back where she belongs.

Titty titty bang bang

Meanwhile, it's the duel of the uber-divas as they tour and seem to compete for tabloid attention. Madonna exposed her nipple in Istanbul (it was Constantinople (not Abu Dhabi)) and it was no wardrobe malfunction as you can see in the picture above.  She proceeded to moon her Rome audience. What an ass!, did someone say? Perhaps in Italiano, eh?!

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga got smacked in the face with a metal pole, at a New Zealand concert, by one of her dancers. A little hostility and sabotage? Fired the klutz's ass, m'Lady? Anyhow, she received a headline by ending up with a concussion with two dramatic blackened eyes. Pretty pretty?

Gaga shines!
Gaga even tweeted about it and posted this picture. No "Natural Gaga" this go-round! Lipstick, eyebrows done, showing off those shiners, suffering for her art.

And so, until the next time, hope to see you on the dancefloor!  Shiners welcome!~~ Buddy

Chart Chat, Billboard Dance /Club Hits Dec. 15, 2011

Deborah Cox is back, big time, on Billboard! Not only that, she's returned to the club music chart with a fantastic, new song written for her by Janice Robinson. That's diva-to-diva, party people, as Janice is best known in dance-music circles as the voice that fronted Livin' Joy in the '90s, on the amazing song, "Dreamer." Now, for those too young to recall, Livin' Joy was a house music group from Italy who released two very successful dance hits: "Dreamer" and "Don't Stop Movin'." (Tameka Starr, however, replaced Janice, who left the group for a solo career, on the latter number.)

"If It Wasn't for Love" is a powerful song with a melody that stays in your head. Cox's voice has never sounded better. It shot up nine points from last week alone and is currently in the #18 spot. Kudos to Deborah and Janice, and congratulations! Don't be surprised, everybody, if Ms Cox takes this all the way up to #1. It's a killer tune!

The club mix by Mixin' Marc & Tony Svejda can be found below, via Youtube. Support our great LGBT-supportive artists by legally downloading their music. "If It Wasn't for Love" can be officially downloaded from iTunes.

Florence & the Machine, who will appear Monday (Dec. 19) on VH-1 Divas Celebrates Soul, nationally in the USA, follows in the next slot (#19) with "Shake It Out," up from 26. Another good show!

Miss Tamara Wallace, singing with Rosabel, goes up to 21 with the exciting "Let Me Be Myself" while, at 22, Cirque du Soleil and Zarkana's "Whenever" stalls from last week.

LeAnn Rimes is up again this week with "Give," at #13, and, as I said last time, the Almighty remix is the way to go with this one. They've done wonders with Missy Rimes before and this is no exception, everybody. Give it a whirl. (On the dance floor, that is.)

The Top Ten this week is brightened by some recent entries doing well. Erika Jayne's "Party People" enters at 8 from 12 last week. "Last Drag," by ex-porn queen, Traci Lords, hits 6 from 11. The fab Wynter Gordon all the way up at #2 with "Buy My Love" (never mind her love; lots of club djs buying her record, looks like). And Beyonce, who looked overlooked last week, when Enrique Iglesias seemed to have snatched the ring at #1 from her ascent, is now at the numero uno spot after all with the fun floor-filler, "Countdown" while Enrique makes a precipitous drop with "I Like How It Feels," landing in 7th place. Not sure he likes the feel of that!

Until next time, get thee to a club, be yourself, express yourself, lose yourself in the music and remember, music is a great uniter and dance music = love for all of us, all over the world. Cheers!
