Divas Make the Scene in Splitsville

Surely. 32--year-old Britney Spears must believe all men are pigs by now or at least be questioning her taste in them. TMZ broke the news that traveled worldwide in a nanosecond that the singer dumped her latest boy toy, David Lucado, after a video surfaced of him "making out with a woman and dancing with her." It was also reported in Star magazine that lothario Lucado was seen pawing, and dancing all night with, another woman at a club in West Hollywood.  It's Britney, bitch! And she doesn't like the disrespect. Who can blame her?

While Brit posted "Ahhhh, the single life!" on Twitter, a representative for Lucado stated that the ex-bf is still "very much" in love with the superstar and hopes to get back together with her. Good luck, pal!

This all comes very shortly after news that Mariah Cary filed for divorce from husband Nick Cannon after discovering Nick was engaging in some extramarital activities, namely with two mistresses. Carey, reportedly devastated, wasted no time in seeking a divorce from the cad. Unrepentant and defiant, the loose Cannon claimed that as far as he was concerned, his marriage with Mariah was a mirage, as it was, in his opinion, "already over." Cheeky!

Ah, my divas! Too often you are victims of the very songs you sing, to paraphrase Candi Staton. All those adoring fans but can't find a man to love you as you know you deserve.

It ain''t over until the diva sings it's been said. Well, Britney and Mariah have just belted it out, boys. So, go, go out the door, don't turn around now, you're not welcome anymore. Do you hear your swan song?

On this week's Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, La Ga's second dance single of the new album plummets after peaking at 7th place, to # 13. Not to be a party pooper, but my dear! Not so good. Especially since Spice Girl Mel B has reached # 5 this outing, upwardly mobile from # 9 last week, with her new club hit, "For Once in My Life."

Gaga, however, has other news to share, like her appearing in Yves St Lauren designer wear on the cover of March's Harper's Bazaar (see above). When she appeared in that magazine in October 2011, it was daringly without make-up. http://djbuddybeaverhausen.blogspot.com/2011/09/natural-gaga-preview.html Now she's put her face back on (or at least someone has) but seems to have forgotten to put on her blouse for the cover shot. Inside, there are other images of the diva, frequently under-dressed for the occasion. In one picture, she is apparently topless and poking her neck through a giant doily.

"Bazaar quizzes her on the secrets of her survival—and finds out why nobody puts Gaga in a corner," the magazine says, hoping to intrigue. That copy bored the shit out of me but -- hey! -- different strokes for different folks! It's all for a good cause, however, as the rag hopes Lady Gaga's glad rags will benefit the pop star's Born This Way Foundation. "See photos from her exclusive March cover shoot and starting February 18th at 9pm EST, in partnership with eBay, you can bid to win Lady Gaga's cover wardrobe...," Bazaar tells us. I shouldn't imagine you'd be wearing these outfits to your day job or place of worship. Or anywhere else in polite society for that matter!

Just in case you don't find all that too exciting, last weekend, Gaga caught Britney Spears' show at Planet Hollywood in Vegas. Obviously, these divas bonded, as La Ga announced over Facebook: "And Britney's dad gave us homeade [sic] BBQ, it was one of the best things I've ever eatin' [sic] in my LIFE."

Back on this week's Billboard, Cher -- who, last time, was stalled in the # 2 spot with "Take It Like a Man" -- has now dropped a peg to #3.  In the numero uno perch? "Go F**k Yourself" by My Crazy Girlfriend. They sure told Cher off! Such disrespect! 

An electro-house number for the declasse Ke$ha crowd, the fact that "Go F**k Yourself" is #1 says something about the state of dance music at this time. Or maybe just something about the state of Billboard's dance-music chart and its validity (once more in question). Of course, I might twirl to this song were I to win one of those Gaga outfits to boogie in. 

Yeah, that's the ticket!

Viva La Britney!

It's Britney, bitches!

Britney Spears brought it on in Las Vegas on December 28, the debut of her 90-minute residency act at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, to a glittering A-List crowd that included Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Adam Lambert and Selena Gomez.

Two nights later, the star of the show, entitled "Piece of Me," flashed a little piece of herself during a now almost obligatory diva wardrobe malfunction. Britney was singing her 2008 single, "Circus," when the back of her sequined gown popped open. One of her chorus boys attempted to fix it while she kept on singing and dancing.

Though critics of the show panned her lip-synching and accused her abs of being "painted on," the show has thus far proven a big draw. Brit does her recent hip-hop hit, "Work It!" as well as her hits, "Oops, I Did It Again," "Baby, One More Time" and "Slave 4 U."

Hindustan Times reported Ms Spears enacted a "subtle tribute" to Michael Jackson when she "donned a fedora hat and struck poses" a'la the late hit-maker. She confirmed to press that this was an intentional homage.

Britney has certainly worked very hard to rebound from her disastrous, slovenly 2007 MTV Awards performance and the further notoriety of her emotional outbursts around that time. She released an album entitled "Blackout" during her public and highly publicized breakdown (including shaving her head bald and attacking the paparazzi with an umbrella), then proceeded to go in and out of rehab.

After years of damage control, she's back, headlining in Vegas to show the world what a disciplined, hard-working artist she is. Looks like she's done it again and we all love a diva in full come-back mode. Let's wish her well. This isn't the Micky Mouse Club any more; Britney's gone big-time!

And, hey, anyhow, I need an excuse to go someplace warm and be royally entertained and catered to. Oh, waiter, make it another banana daiquiri please, baby, one more time!

My Octoberry Turntables

Halloween is coming but the latest promos I've received aren't scary at all! In fact, they were quite encouraging for the most part.

The Paperchaser club mixes of Martha Wash's "It's My Time" aren't as successful as I'd hoped for. The club mix is generally too short for club sets, clocking in at 4:45. Though it retains the integrity of the power ballad from the ex-Weather Girl's wonderful, "Something Good" album, it's a bit clumsy in parts, especially in its segue to and from the song's bridge. The Paperchaser Money Mix is just dross with a cacophonous industrial sound that had me searching for the Advil.

Come on, remixers, this is the great Martha Wash, one of the prima divas of dance! Tony Moran, Ralphi Rosario, where are you?

When Madonna kissed Britney Spears at the Grammy Awards, it was the kiss of death as Britney has, in no way, lived up to being the next Madge in terms of career consistency. Now and then, however, Brit surprises us with a new club hit and she is currently back with the hip-hop inspired "Work Bitch!" She's not twerkin'; she's not even werq'n; she's good, old-fashioned working this hot little number. Already hugely popular; expect it to chart in a major way.

With a certain Madonna-esque affectation, Britney has a curious way of sounding British at certain essential moments of enunciation in this partly rapped, partly sung melange. But, let me just admit, this is my current guilty pleasure. I LOVE this song! Official remixes to come though there's a bum crop of bootleg mixes available now.

Judy Cheeks ("Reach") returns to dancefloors with "Without Love We're Lost," sporting a great remix from Paul Goodyesr. (Music link below.) Incredible diva vocals and pure, melodic dance-music bliss.
So cheeky! And Australian diva, Tina Area, is back, too, with the always-fabulous remixers, 7th Heaven, bringing "You Set Fire to My Life" to energetic life for dancefloors. The Cosmic Dawn remix is also aces on this one. Two great new dance songs that will move your heart, spirit and feet.

Dj Buddy Beaverhausen's Hollywood Babble On

Well, it was a couple of days of prattle and tattle, lots of it involving figures in the world of pop music. Let me clue you in:

Darlene Love, on Tuesday, proudly announced, "My agent just informed me the United Nations purchased ALL the tickets to my show at 54 Below Theatre on Monday August 6th which means it's completely SOLD OUT!!!! I wonder who will be showing up!" Well, so do I!  I imagine a room of global dignitaries, guzzling cocktails, letting the weight of the world melt from their shoulders to Darlene belting out "He's A Rebel." Of course, that may not so relaxing for members of the General Assembly, especially those from countries like Yemen and Pakistan.

Maybe Dj Buddy B can get a Q&A with the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famer before her next 54 Below performance. (I've got a Q&A coming up soon with another fabulous, powerhouse diva!) I'll keep you posted on both fronts.

Can you believe screen heartthrob and TCM favorite Tab Hunter is 81 today? His autobiography is very gentlemanly. The only performer he didn't seem to get along with was Tallulah Bankhead (drunk and mean when they were in the Tennessee Williams Broadway flop,  The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore), and he even limits saying anything negative about her. Still good-looking, with a still athletic build, he's still performing (dinner theater). Gay fans know him best for starring twice with Divine, in Polyester and in Lust in the Dust. He also had an affair with Anthony Perkins. It's in the book.

It was Miss Britney Spears who left X Factor in the dust due to her spontaneous hissy fit. San Francisco Chronicle claims she "left the set of 'The X-Factor' auditions in North Carolina on Monday after a contestant, dressed in drag, destroyed her pop hit '(You Drive Me) Crazy.'"

How could you "destroy" that?

"Music mogul Reid appeared to feel Spears’ pain during the audition – he patted the singer on the back as Lovato and Cowell tried to hide their disbelief by covering their faces with their hands," said People.com. Or hiding their laughing at a fellow judge.

Simon Cowell, astute as ever, told the contestant, “I don’t think she quite understood your tribute.”

"Spears returned to her seat moments later and added, 'I really respect the tribute. It was really nice," the Chronicle adds.  C'mon! She was told to say that when the producers turned missy around backstage and pushed her back onto the set, reminding her just what that big, fat paycheck is for.

If there's a cruel joke here at all, it was played by the show's producers.

The very tall, dark and very handsome actor, Cheyenne Jackson, has joined the HBO cast of Behind the Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover, Scott Thorson. Steven (Magic Mike) Soderbergh directs. I hope Cheyenne has a shirtless scene or two. Why, I would have named this film Beyond the Valley of the Candelabras!

Thank God, when I went to Vegas to see Bette Midler perform, I went out to the desert, beyond the valley, to The Liberace Museum (now defunct). It smelled as if Libby was buried right there, under the floorboards! Incredible.

And, now, two odd facts I want to share with you because I love you:

Fact #1 from Unicorn Booty: "A new study suggests the key to avoiding morning sickness – or the cure for those afflicted with it – is devouring as much of your babydaddy’s semen as humanly possible." It also suggests semen is a cure for nausea. But, really, ladies and gents, can you imagine going in to your partner, waking him up in bed, and saying: "Darling, I think I'm going to puke. Do you mind if I...?"

I think not.  Of course, Joan Crawford had it on hand in a refrigerator. Good for her complexion she swore, applying it as a moisturizer. So you might take that into consideration as far as preparedness is concerned.

Fact #2 comes from my friend, Jennifer Lott Randall: "300 A.D. Christian martyr St. Apollonia, the patron saint of dentistry, is burned by the Romans after having her teeth extracted." We Catholics have a patron saint for oral hygiene! In 300 A.D., that meant just bashing all your teeth out. And St. Apollonia was put to death by the Tea Party of her time for being toothless! (I admit it's not the chicest look for a girl.) Still, I'll never again bitch about dental procedures or orthodontia!

Katy Perry Vs. Lady Gaga on the Year-End 2011 Dance/Club Billboard Charts

Well, I was certainly surprised, disappointed, occasionally impressed but certainly not blase about the results of Billboard's annual wrap-up of the dance/club charts for the year 2011.

It was Katy Perry who held the #1 spot on the Dance/ Club Play list with "E.T." Did you say, "Really?" That's what I said! Katy was also in the #6 spot, singing about girls gone wild ("Last Friday Night"), which I'm sure was a fave at sorority parties everywhere but not something I'd care to hear at a club particularly. The best song from the Teenage Dream album is "Firework," in my opinion, charting on the Club Play list at 19. This derivative but infectious ditty surprisingly was not mashed up with Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," with which it shares a common theme, the way Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" was mashed with Madonna's "Express Yourself," with which it shares a melodic structure.

A little incidental trivia: Did you know Katy is the great-niece of director Frank Perry, the director of "Mommie Dearest?" (Perhaps we should start playing Six Degrees of Mommie Dearest.)

Second place sees Rihanna all settled in with the "whips and chains" of "S&M," a little bracing coming from a victim of date violence. Exploit much and possibly not a well woman at large here, though very pretty when her face isn't battered by Chris Brown.

Kylie nicely sits atop both the tenth and eleventh spots. The big surprise here is that "Put Your Hands Up" is the 11th spot and "Better Than Today" is one entry up at #10.

Cher's back on the annual Billboard dance hits list with "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me." Dance remixes (notably by Almighty) lifted this one upward on Billboard from the soundtrack of Burlesque. Always a good year when Cher charts for the dance floor.

The shocker on this chart is the fact that Lady Gaga's biggest hit on it is #23, and that's the anthemic "Born This Way," which I thought received endless club play earlier this year. So, excuse me here, but "E.T." phoning home at #1 and "Born This Way" at 23? Doesn't add up! I'd love to see a breakdown of gay club play vs straight club play because results might be quite different, I think. God, I miss the old DMA (Dance Music Authority) magazine!

But Gaga has four hits on the 2011 top 50 whereas Perry has three. Our Lady of Gaga also charts at 37 with "The Edge of Glory;" 41 with "Judas" and 45 with "You & I."

On the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, however, Gaga rules. Born This Way is #1 on that list and The Fame album is #3.

The Fame Monster is #8, while The Remix -- just recently released -- is #9. Ranking four out of the top 10? A simply dazzling feat for any artist.

Ultimately, on the Dance/Club Artists chart, Billboard has Miss Perry in the numero uno spot and La Gaga at numero dos.

Other gay-favorite divas who charted are: Jennifer Lopez with "On the Floor," "I'm Into You" and "Papi" (numbers 15, 16 and 18, respectively); Wynter Gordon's "Til Death" made #20; ageless wonder Yoko Ono came in at nos. 21 and 28 with "Move On Fast" and "Talking to the Universe," respectively. Erika Jayne is in the 22nd spot with "One Hot Pleasure" as the always divine Kritine W charts a respectable 23 with this year's "Fade." Gloria Estefan's "Wepa" is #38, which is nice considering it was released in the fall and tallied alot of play in a relatively short period. The ubiquitous Betty White and Luciana got their "I'm Still Hot" hot enough to be this year's number 48 dance/club hit. You got it goin' on, Perfect Betty!

But it's our Britney who's kind of bottom-heavy on the Dance/Club list this year.

Though "Til the World Ends" did a smashing #17 on this year's round-up, Britney holds the numbers 34 and 39 places down with "Hold It Against Me" followed with "I Wanna Go."

Buddy Beaverhausen's Notes to Divas and other musings on music

Carol Hahn was a delight when she brought her powerful pipes recently to Splash in New York. She is simply a club diva's club diva who came to international attention in the 1980s with a few hiNRG hits. After taking time off reputedly to continue college (for something like 25 years?), she made a comeback a couple of years ago with her songs "Reach Out" and "Come Be My Lover". This year, she recorded and released two more well-crafted songs, full of energy and passion: "I Can Stop the Rain" and "Take Me and Dance," both of which made it up the Billboard Club chart. Buy/download her songs and move and groove to her; in short, take her and dance.

Of course, you've heard that Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga are the new faces of MAC Viva Glam, which benefits the MAC AIDS Fund. Ads will appear in February 2010 and Gaga and Cyndi lipsticks will be available a month later. Can't wait! And have you heard? Cyn met President Obama and he actually told her he thought Gaga was the new her. Well, certainly Gaga has the edginess but, I mean... Cyndi's the Ethel Merman of rock, right? Gaga's voice is pleasant enough in a Gwen Stefani way, but she can't belt it out like our Cyn. But don't get me wrong; I love Lady Gaga and am all set to buy her new "The Fame Monster" cd.

Madonna's latest single -- currently hosting a slew of white label mixes, the best attributed to Mike Danavan -- is "It's So Cool", which isn't. The beat is pumpin' but Madge is in preaching mode again imparting her banalities upon us. "It's so cool to be uncool/It's so right to be unright...." "Unright"? But that's so wrong! (Note to Madonna: run spell check.) Now, the theme of universal love is not such a bad thing, but, frankly, I could do without the holier-than-thou attitude it comes wrapped in.

Note to divas: Enunciate! I love Mia J's electropoppy "Headlights" but, I swear, when she gets to the chorus, it sounds like she's singing "caught in the head lice." Isn't she British? Why does her English sound like Agnetha Faltskog on a bad day? But it's ok; when I first heard Janet Jackson's "Feedback", I thought she was singing, "feed bag." Then, I thought it was "meat rack." No kidding. Enunciate.

Talking about Janet, club mixes of the extremely catchy "Make Me" are out to coincide with the release of her "Number Ones" album. She benefits from top-drawer remixes by Ralphi Rosario, Craig J, Bimbo Jones and Moto Blanco.

Whitney & Britney: Aesthetically diminishing returns from Whitney Houston, guys. She started on a relative high with "I Didn't Know My Own Strength". (Is anyone else feeling Junior Vasquez's sturm und drang mixes are getting a little played out by now? Wake up, Junior, the 90s are ovah! Really.) "Million Dollar Bill" was far less interesting and further showcased how deteriorated Miss Whitney's voice is. The current Johnny Vicious and Giuseppe D mixes of "I Look to You" do just about everything humanly possible to make it relevant but it is, sadly, a rather undistinguished effort. Nonetheless, her fans will love it and I expect it will be her third chart-buster on Billboard.

Far more interesting, surprisingly, is the latest comeback bid by Britney Spears. "3", as mixed by Groove Police, Lenny Bertoldo and (my fave) Rafael Lellis, is a spunky dancefloor tune that'll make you wanna twirl. I'm not sure what Brit's carrying on about (must have written the lyrics all by her lonesome) but she's claiming she's "caught in between" something. (Legs? I can relate.)

One of my favorite Swedish groups is back with a new dance hit that ought to be big internationally with the exception of the United States (a very boring, though huge, dance-music market). Alcazar (now back from a foursome to the original 3 -- oh, maybe this is what Britney's gurgling about!) returns with the snazzy "Burnin'" (and enunciating quite well, mind you, Mia J). Best mix award for this one goes to the stalwart team at Almighty.

Almighty, by the way, has just hired new management, MWR. Expect to see Almighty remixing more high-profile names, names, names as MWR are the folks who represent Jason Nevins, Wideboys, Cahill, Stonebridge and the omnipresent Moto Blanco.

And remixer Pete Hammond ("100 years old", as he claims on his My Space page) has another Billboard dance remix with Plumb's "Hang On" (Pete certainly has hung on in there, baby), which sounds grafted onto the beats and cowbells of his Dead or Alive "You Spin Me Round" production of some generations back. Pass the poppers and the Geritol!
