The Obamas Honor Dance Music Legend Frankie Knuckles

In 2004, Senator Barack Obama helped to declare Frankie Knuckles Day on August 25th in Chicago. Today, President Obama and First Lady Michelle offered condolences to his family, fans and friends. Dj David Morales said today: "You know you're a true legend when u get one of these." Back in June 2012, I wrote of Morales and Obama on this blog:

David Morales is back, ready to get everyone on their feet to his nouveau disco sound with "Golden Era," a retro-tinged dance number with orchestral flourishes associated with classic dance-floor arrangements. None other than club-fave Roisin Murphy (pictured), the contralto Irish diva of dance and electronica fame, is the featured vocalist on this and she rises to the occasion beautifully. So, swirl, hands up in the air, Sunday tea dance style, on the day our President officially and historically pronounced June "Gay Pride Month!" And have a cocktail or two to really celebrate. Happy days are here again this summer; toast to a new Golden Era! Disco's back!

Today's letter from the First Couple read: "Frankie's work helped open minds and bring people together, blending genres to capture our attention and ignite our imaginations. He was a trailblazer in his field, and his legacy lives on in the city of Chicago and on dance floors across the globe."

Huffington Post wrote today: Also this week, musician Elton John announced the creation The Frankie Knuckles Fund, a new charity fund that will support HIV research in black communities and operate under the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

"Frankie was such a lovely man and a great talent," John said in a statement, "and his legacy provides a powerful voice to reach out to people, particularly men of color, about their essential role in helping to create an AIDS-free future."

Knuckles' family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations in Knuckles' memory be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York.

The dance-music community applauds our President, First Lady and Elton John for the recognition and the tributes to the Godfather of House Music deserves. Class acts all.

Although our President obviously meant nothing but respect for legendary diva Aretha Franklin, he had a spelling malfunction while introducing her at the White House.

"'What a lineup!' Mr. Obama declared at the outset of a concert that featured a generations-spanning array of soul singers stretching from musical legends Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle to 20-year-old Ariana Grande," said CBS News.

"Mr. Obama paid tribute to Franklin for turning her signature song 'Respect' into 'a rallying cry for African-Americans, women and then everyone who felt marginalized.'

"The pumped-up audience gave a hearty laugh but was more than willing to forgive the president for spelling it 'R-S-P-E-C-T.'"

Hey, at least he didn't refer to her as Adele Azeem! Of course, the conservative press and, especially, Fox News, jumped on this immediately. "Aretha Franklin may spell out the word 'Respect' several times throughout her synonymous song, but that doesn’t mean Harvard-educated President Obama knows how to spell it," Fox barked. Come on, give the President some rspect. And by the way, you misused the word "synonymous," Foxies.

The President's blunder was nothing compared to John Travolta's Oscars gaff, introducing Broadway diva headliner Idina Menzel as "Adele Azeem." I saw Ms Mendel in her new Broadway musical, If/Then, that started in previews Wedneday evening. http://djbuddybeaverhausen.blogspot.com/2014/03/broadway-beaverhausen-ifthen-notgood.html  Her rendition of the theme song from Frozen, which snagged an Academy Award, was definitely one of the many high points of the Awards ceremony last Sunday evening.

Sheila MacRae (nee Stephens) passed away of natural causes two days ago in Elmwood, NJ at the age of 92. The British-born Ms MacRae was married to tall, dark and handsome singer George MacRae (not to be confused with George McCrae who sang the disco hit, "Rock Your Baby"). Sheila and George performed professionally as a vocal duo. The couple divorced in 1967. She co-starred in feature films like Caged and Sex & the Single Girl. She appeared as herself in an episode of I Love Lucy, and replaced Audrey Meadows as Alice Kramden for The Honeymooners episodes on The Jackie Gleason Show. Her daughter, Meredith McRae, played Billie Jo on tv's Petticoat Junction.

One of my dance diva faves, Amber Dirks http://djbuddybeaverhausen.blogspot.com/2012/07/exclusive-q-with-dance-diva-amber-dirks.html, is charging up the Billboard dance chart, currently in the Top 50 at # 47 with Bouvier & Barona's "Dominate My Love." Spice Girl Mel B holds onto the top of the Billboard club/dance chart at # 12 with the ebullient "For Once in My Life." Kylie Minogue's gone into the blue with "Into the Blue" at # 11 in a scant 3 weeks. And jet-propelled to # 14 this week, the 2014 remix of "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper. It reached its current position in just 3 weeks, up from #27 on the last chart.

The Obama Experience: Winter Olympics Message to Putin

This Wednesday, US President Barack Obama scored a diplomatic coup regarding the Winter Olympics in Russia. According to ESPN (yes, ESPN! How often do you find Buddy B quoting ESPN?!):

President Barack Obama sent Russia a clear message about its treatment of gays and lesbians with who he is -- and isn't -- sending to represent the United States at the Sochi Olympics.
Billie Jean King will be one of two openly gay athletes in the U.S. delegation for the opening and closing ceremonies, Obama announced Tuesday. For the first time since 2000, however, the U.S. will not send a president, former president, first lady or vice president to the Games.

Now, Billie Jean is not my lover, but I love seeing her going off to the Olympics as a representative along with Czech-born Martina Navratilova, the other "openly gay athlete"! Czechmate!

King told the press she was "deeply honored" to represent the United States at the event.

Buddy Beaverhausen can only assume Greg Louganis was not available. I mean "gayness" is actually part of that man's name! Plus he's still a cutie-pie.

ESPN (yes, that ESPN!) continued:

Russia has come under fierce criticism for passing national laws banning "gay propaganda." Though the White House did not specifically address the Russian laws in making its announcement, spokesman Shin Inouye said the delegation "represents the diversity that is the United States" and that Obama "knows they will showcase to the world the best of America -- diversity, determination and teamwork."
 
The White House said Obama's schedule will not permit him to attend the Games.
 
"It's a positive sign to see openly gay representatives in the delegation," said Michael Cole-Schwartz, spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, which recently sent a letter urging Obama to include gays and lesbians in the delegation. "Hopefully it sends a message to the Russian people and the rest of the world that the United States values the civil and human rights of LGBT people."

From Russia with Hate

The above is an image of street art outside the Russian embassy in Sweden, protesting Russia's current policy of hate and oppression towards gay citizens. During this brouhaha, Canada's Parliament building was awash in lavender lighting. In Amsterdam, rainbow flags were on display for a visit of the Russian president Putin. The council of the city of Amsterdam decided to hang out the gay pride flag on all council-owned buildings and offices in protest of the human rights violation.

Still, the Olympics Committee so far refuses to move the venue of the Olympics in light of this debacle where mere support of equality for LGBT people in Russia is a severely punishable crime. High-profile and openly gay artists Harvey Fierstein, Tilda Swinton and George Takei have protested and promoted boycotting the Russian winter Olympics. Boycotts of Russian imports, especially vodka, continue throughout the world. Don't even consider a Faberge egg right now, dahlings!

As for US President Obama, he's cancelled a meeting with Putin scheduled for September on a number of issues including this human rights outrage. Obama told Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, “I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them.... One of the things I think is very important for me to speak out on is making sure that people are treated fairly and justly because that’s what we stand for, and I believe that that’s a precept that’s not unique to America. That’s just something that should apply everywhere."

Still, the Russians are bearish on bigotry in this matter. Two days ago, in that country, Olympic poll-vaulting shill Yelena Isinbayeva said that equality for gay people was Russia's greatest problem. Really? Of all of that nation's socioeconomic issues, that is actually what Ms I considers the country's main concern?

Yelena got real a day later and said she was Miss Understood.

People, BOYCOTT THE RUSSIAN OLYMPICS!

LGBT Pride 2013: Busting Out All Over!

June is Pride month and it's busting out all over! Ninety-plus degree weather in NYC, coming out of a chilly, damp spring, and it's time to celebrate. President Obama issued a Proclamation today that began: "The story of America's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is the story of our fathers and sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends and neighbors who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union. It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American promise that all people can live with dignity and fairness under the law. Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

Carole King Awarded at the White House

President Obama called songwriter/singer Carole King a "living legend" last night when he presented her, at the White House, with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, given by the U.S. Library of Congress.

The 71-year-old, four-time Grammy winner co-wrote her first number-one hit in 1960, at age 17, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," with Gerry Goffin, originally recorded by The Shirelles. Ms King is the first woman to be given this lifetime achievement award. She also was the first female solo artist to sell more than 10 million copies of a single album with her 1971 release, Tapestry.

"Two days after much of Moore, Okla., was flattened by a powerful tornado that killed 24 people, Obama pledged anew that the nation will assist with the town's recovery and rebuilding for as long as it takes," reported Billboard.

"'Eventually, life will go on and new memories will be made. New laughter will come. New songs will be sung,' [the President] said during a tribute concert for King in the East Room of the White House.

"'And that's often why we turn to music during trying times, for comfort and for inspiration, and sometimes just for a good diversion.'"

Inauguration Proclamation 2013

In his Inauguration address today, President Obama proclaimed: "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. For if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well." This is to be applauded; a sign of hope; a defiance of all the haters.

It was also the observance of Martin Luther King Day today, which made the struggle for equality all that more poignant. As dance diva Debby Holiday revealed on her Facebook timeline: 

"As a little girl ... I remember walking down the street in LA, holding my white mother's hand (and, child I mean WHITE)!!  We rec'd stares everywhere. I mean EVERYwhere!! Sometimes people were even quite cruel to my mother.  As if she'd committed the ultimate sin. Lovin one of them Negros.

"So, on this day ... where America Inaugurated our first Black President (well, mixed like me) AGAIN - meaning it was not a fluke, on MLK's official Birthday, and said the word Gay for the first time in an Inauguration speech & hearing his continued belief in equal pay for women & a road for our immigrants towards citizenship & dignity ... Well, on this day ... that little mixed girl is smiling.

"Because now -- as a woman who is proud of her black & Irish heritage & loves her gay friends & her friends of just about every nationality ... On this day ... this Woman is Proud of how far we've come since that little girl bowed her head in confusion and, I am so damn hopeful for the road ahead."

That truly describes the advances we've made in America towards total equality and a just and fair society, and against discrimination, hatred and prejudice. Today was an outstanding day that we, in the USA, celebrate! We are a society that no longer discriminates against women, people of color and people of various affectionate orientations. We have progressed. We have largely fulfilled Dr Martin Luther King's dream.

And, I assume it was no coincidence that two gay-fave and fabulous divas were asked to perform at the Inauguration: Beyonce ("National Anthem", introduced by New York's own Chuck Schumer) and Kelly Clarkson ("My Country T'is of Thee," known elsewhere as "God Bless the King" )! US Presidential Nail-Biter Night

Nail-biter night, typical for Election Day Eve every four years. If I wake up and find out Mitt Romney won and will become President of the United States, I'll be one unhappy bitch for some time, but only after I violently toss my cookies come morning. (And I did eat cookies tonight.)

I'm hoping, as Little Orphan Annie sang, that the sun will come up tomorrow, though I know it literally won't as we're expecting a nor'easter. That's right, another storm hitting the east coast! Though I can stand the rain, I tell you, if Obama is still our President.

I went to an Election Night soiree earlier to be amongst like-minded friends, and where dinner was served (roast beast and veg) along with cosmos and wine. The aforementioned home-made cookies filled the bill (and my belly). Believe me, I needed medication and food to get over my anxiety, especially as early red-state Presidential results rode in.

So many votes, so little time. So much voter suppression! Republicans have become very aggressive about their subversive tactics. Have we become a banana republic? Or is that an insult to bananas?

The so-far-too-close-to-call polls seem to favor Obama, and I optimistically hope to wake up to happy news. It may not be on the early morning edition of The New York Times. I might get it from one of my friends, in the ground-floor deli, as he serves me coffee. Those Yemeni guys are Obama supporters. Of Romney, they plainly stated, "He wants to start a war in the Mideast. It's all about oil." Do you think?

Be afraid. Be very afraid. What can be said about a potential American President, on the diplomacy front, who alienates the British?

But I go to bed happy about Senate wins for Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin. And Wanda Sykes just Tweeted: "That's what I'm talkin bout! Bye bye Akin and Mourdock! Women just gave you a legitimate beat down. It was God's will."

The sun will come up tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar there'll be snow and sleet and wind and an Obama win. Nighty night!

As for this week's Billboard, divas Mariah Carey and Pink finally make it into the top 25 of the Dance/Club chart with fabulous new songs that will put you on the floor!  Pink arrives at a hot-pink #18 with "Blow Me (a Kiss)" while I think it safe to say Ms Carey's anthemic "Triumphant" (#21) is indeed a triumph; one of the best things she's ever done and the remixes are to die for. Take it to the dancefloor, bitches, this mama's on fire and she's bringing it to the top, wardrobe malfunctions and whatever!

Scissor Sisters' "Let's Have A Kiki" #2 under Usher's "Scream" at #1. Expect it to usurp first place next week. Cyndi Lauper's fuck-me pumps walk her down to #16 from 6th place's peak last week with the fabulous "Sex Is in the Heel." Sarah Ferguson's hot "Nothing's Real But Love" (is it?), is at Cyndi's back, now up at #14. And Adam Lambert's "Never Close Our Eyes," which peaked, like Cyndi, at #6, is now standing at #16.

"Cher has ignited the electoral controversy du jour with an anti-Mitt Romney tweet that some are interpreting as an expression of bigotry against Mormons.

"Friday, the singer posted a tweet expressing the need for President Barack Obama to get 'all his ducks in a row.' She wrote: 'I Feel if he doesn't get all his DUCKS IN A ROW we'll b forced 2 listen 2Uncaring Richy Rich! The whitest man in MAGIC UNDERWEAR in the WH.'

"Observant members of the Mormon church, both men and women, always wear what is sometimes called 'celestial underwear' or, more formally a 'temple garment.' However, the term 'magic underwear' is considered offensive and derogatory.

"Online push back against Cher’s tweet was immediate and strident: 'I love when one rich person berates another for being rich,' one person posted on the site Twitchy, which called the actress an 'Anti-Mormon Bigot' in a headline. 'I guess she is another example of a celebrity who surrounds themselves with people who always tell them what they want to hear so that they don't have to think before they speak or 'tweet in this case.'" I won't point out the grammatical error.

Well, talk about getting your celestial panties in a bunch, sweeties! I, for one, then wanted to see this celestial underwear, so I did a search:

By the way, I spent a night with a Mormon once! He was hot. I believe he took me to the Telestial Kingdom that night. Unfortunately, he had a lot of issues. (And I thought us Catholics were messed up!) But he was wearing sexy little briefs, not magic underwear. Thank God! I mean, long johns in the summertime? Uh-uh, honey, out you would go, no matter what else was long or which Kingdom you were planning to transport me to!

Anyhoo, like me, Ms Cher is a Taurus. So, without apology for her comment, she did later say via Twitter, "Im Taurus, Put head down & go forward! Like bumper car i hit somethin keep going" I Taurusly can relate.

Cher is working on a prospective Broadway show about her life, and will tour this autumn as she has a new album to be released. (I know, I know, she had a long-running "farewell tour"! What can I tell you?) She describes the new album as “hardcore dance” music and it is expected to include her duet with Lady Gaga.

Kylie's got a timebomb!

Shawn Christopher ("Another Sleepless Night") is the divine diva on Ralphi Rosario's remake of "Menergy," peaking for Pride and now nestled at #24. Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue's incendiary "Timebomb" explodes at #21, making "the biggest goddamned explosion you've ever heard," as Liz Taylor said in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. That's a 10-position boost from last week's #31! (Time for some explosions with US's Independence Day and France's Bastille Day in the air.)

Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" does seem alert as it jumps from #22 to #11. Toni Braxton's "I Heart You" is at #8, fallen from the top spot last time, after its meteoric rise. (Still a hot number.)

Like the Wicked Witch of the West, who knew how to screw up a good time, Liza Minnelli weighs in on the Broadway hit, "End of the Rainbow" which is, of course, about her mum, Judy Garland.

Writes Billboard on the matter: "Liza is back! The long-unavailable recording of Liza Minnelli's legendary Winter Garden concert in 1974 is available for the first time. The singer/actress, who charmingly still uses words like swell and grand, spoke to Billboard about 'Live at the Winter Garden' and her lasting career, being a gay icon along along with Lady Gaga, plus she takes issue with 'End of the Rainbow,' a new Broadway play about her mother, Judy Garland, that Backstage describes as a 'tabloid view of Garland's final descent into despair and self-destruction.'

"It amazes me that they can do anything they want and say anything they want that's not true," she told us about the show, which she has not seen. [Emphasis my own.] "It upsets all of us, but not to the point where you get really upset. It's more like, 'Oh please!'"

As Mother's Day is coming up, I'll give her a pass for defending the memory of her mom.  I'd do the same. But, really, do you think keeper-of-the-flame, Liza, would say:"Yes! They nailed it! Mom was a mess!" Lorna might.

Sparkle, Mr President, Sparkle!

This was my absolutely favorite moment of last week's Betty White 90th Birthday NBC special. The joke is terrific but Obama bopping his head to "The Golden Girls" theme song is even funnier. Stop, Barack, you're killing me! You've got my vote, you've got my vote! Ah, you're a riot!



But now that you came to New York and sang a little Al Green at The Apollo, well, that's when I said, "I love this guy!" Because we deserve a President who cannot only inspire but occasionally amuse us.
